Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair on Al-Albaani Being One of the Major Scholars of the Ummah

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair, may Allaah protect him, said, “And for that reason Al-Dhahabi came, Ibn Hajar came, Al-Haafidh al-’Iraaqi came, Abu Zur’ah ibn al-Haafidh al-’Iraaqi came, major scholars who graded hadith to be authentic and weak, good was placed at their hands [continuing] up to this era of ours—until the [line of] Huffaadh and Imaams was completed with al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, p. 234.

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair About Al-Albaani: “He is The Imaam and Reviver of The Sunnah.”

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair, may Allaah protect him, was asked, “What is your opinion about the checkings of the muhaddith Al-Albaani?”

So he answered, “The Shaikh, may Allaah have mercy on him, is above what is said about him, and if we were to mention his virtues, even if it took a long time, even if it took hours, we would not have covered anything in terms of what he did in aiding the Sunnahfor he is the Imaam and Reviver of the Sunnah—and the Sunnah was not known in this manner except through him, may Allaah the Most High have mercy on him.”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, p. 233.

Al-Albaani said, “When al-Albaani Dies, the People will Come to Know Him.”

Shaikh Muhammad Musa Nasr said, “And near the end of his life, I heard the Shaikh saying, ‘When al-Albaani dies, the people will come to know him.’ Now, after his death, the people know al-Albaani. His house in his area … his neighbours didn’t know him, someone would come and ask about him and they would say, ‘Shaikh al-Albaani, we don’t know him,’ after he died the people came to know him. A person went to the Bahamas … and found two hundred and fifty Muslim families on that island, all of them Salafis—how did al-Albaani get to them? His tapes did, they never saw him with their eyes but they lived according to his tapes, all of them were on the Book and the Sunnah, not a single one of them was from the hizbi Jamaa’ahs or the Sufis. This shows that al-Albaani’s truthfulness and his sincerity spread his da’wah around the world …”

Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir as-Sindhi Staunchly Defending Shaikh al-Albaani Against the Person who was the Prime Reason for Al-Albaani Leaving Medinah

“Dr. Falaah Ismail Mundakar said, ‘We used to study with our Shaikh, Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir Habeebullaah as-Sindhi, who was one of the major scholars, he used to teach us ‘Nukhbatul-Fikr’ in the Haram [of Medinah], and the people used to want to devour his speech and explanations of mustalah, the science of hadith and its narrators, it being so sweet. The Shaikh had moved from a house which was close to one that was far, and I had a car but he didn’t … so it was an opportunity for me to take him to his house. We left the Haram and stood there waiting while the brothers left to go and bring the car close to the Gate of Umar since it was next to the street.

Then one of the Shaikhs and judges came, and there is no harm in naming him, it was Atiyyah Muhammad Saalim, he came—and he was a judge who lived in and was connected to Medinah, he came and gave a very warm salaam to the Shaikh and I gave him salaam [too].

He said [to Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir], ‘O Shaikh! Where is the treatise? Where is the book? Fear Allaah! Why are you hiding knowledge?! I want to print it, I will print it at my own personal cost, give me the book! Bring it out! Produce the knowledge and do not hide it.’

Shaikh Atiyyah was a judge, and all the Shaikhs were apprehensive of the judges because they always sat with the princes and those in government.

Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir started to excuse himself saying, ‘Wallaahi, I will soon search … I don’t know where I put it … I will search for it amongst my papers …’

Shaikh Atiyyah left and [then] Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir said to me, ‘Ahhh! Do you know what he wants?’

I said, ‘No, Wallaahi O Shaikh, I don’t know.’

He said, ‘Did you see him?’

I said, ‘Yes, I saw him.’

He said, ‘However many souls he had … even if he had a hundred souls and dropped right here, and one soul after the other left him … the souls left him and he died—I would not give him that book!’

I said, ‘O Shaikh, what is this book?’

He said, ‘O Shaikh, they were some words that I had written to my brother, my beloved Shaikh, Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani where I answered him on some issues, he [i.e., Judge Atiyyah] came while I was writing and he saw them with me in the library and from that day on he’s been after me.’

Then Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir said to me, ‘By Allaah, if he were to die and then be brought back to life, and then die and be brought back to life [again]—I will not give him the book. I will never distribute it.’

I said to him, ‘Why, O Shaikh of ours?’

He said, ‘Because he wants to quench his rage! By Allaah, he doesn’t want it as a matter of knowledge between us and our Shaikh [al-Albaani], if he wanted it for the sake of knowledge and to sincerely advise, it would’ve happened.’

[Then] he said to me, ‘Do you know that he is the reason that the Shaikh [i.e., al-Albaani] had to leave Madinah or don’t you know that?’

I said, ‘Wallaahi, I had heard.’

He said, ‘He is the reason, the prime reason that Shaikh al-Albaani was made to leave Madinah—[and] I’m going to give it to him?!’

I said, ‘No, and may Allaah reward you with good, don’t give it to him!’'”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, pp. 118-120.

Al-‘Abbaad, “The One who Abuses al-Albaani Has no Intellect.”

Questioner:
This person says, ‘O Shaikh of ours, may Allaah protect you, there are some who attack Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, and accuse him of having a corrupt ’aqidah, in fact, they describe him as someone whose ’aqidah is no different than that of the polytheists, what is your Eminence’s opinion about these statements?

Al-’Abbaad: The Prophet said, “Whosoever gives me a guarantee to safeguard what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I shall guarantee him Paradise,” that which is between his jaws is the tongue. Likewise when the Prophet mentioned the forms of good in his advice to Mu’aadh ibn Jabal, he said, “Shall I not tell you of the foundation of all of that?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.” So he took hold of his tongue and said, “Restrain this.” I said, “O Prophet of Allaah, will we be taken to account for what we say with it?” He ﷺ said, “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’aadh! Is there anything that throws people into the Hellfire upon their faces—or: on their noses—except the harvests of their tongues?”

And it is known that backbiting is forbidden, but backbiting the scholars through whom Allaah has benefitted the people and through whom much good has come about in terms of spreading knowledge and clarifying it, this is even more severe and greater than backbiting other people.

And there is no doubt that the person who says such things has wronged himself, and the harm goes back on himself, the Prophet explained who the bankrupt person in the Hereafter is when, in an authentic hadith, he said to his Companions, “Do you know who the bankrupt person is?” They replied, “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property,” they thought he was asking about the bankrupt people of the world so they said, “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property,” but he ﷺ was asking about the bankrupt person of the Hereafter, and such a person is the one who is truly bankrupt, i.e., a bankrupt person in the world is [indeed] bankrupt but the one who is even more bankrupt than him is the one of the Hereafter.

So who is the bankrupt person of the Hereafter? He said, “The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and charity, (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others. So his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account and he would be thrown in the Fire.”

So this person who made such evil, ugly statements about this lofty scholar has only wronged and harmed himself—and none of that hurts Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, its harm goes back to the one who made the statements, it will not reach al-Albaani, al-Albaani will receive good and righteous deeds because of this crime against him from that person who has set loose his tongue against him by making statements such as these which do not befit or emanate from a person who has any intellect.

Shaikh Badee’ud-Deen as-Sindhi ar-Raashidi About Shaikh al-Albaani

Abu Muhammad Badee’ud-Deen Shaah ibn as-Sayyid Shaah Ihsaanullaah ibn Rushdullaah Shaah ibn Rasheedud-Deen Shaah ibn Muhammad Yaa-Seen Shaah ibn Muhammad Raashid Shaah ar-Raashidi al-Husaini [d. 1996] used to praise Shaikh al-Albaani and he said, ‘Shaikh al-Albaani is the Shaikh of Hadith and its reviver in this age,’ and he gifted some books to Shaikh al-Albaani, having written on them, ‘A gift to His Eminence, the Muhaddith, the Shaikh, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah protect him.’”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, pp. 105-106.

Al-Albaani’s Praise of Ehsan Elahi Zaheer and a Mention of Shaikh Ehsan’s Humility in that He Would Massage Al-Albaani’s Feet

Ehsan Elahi Zaheer’s Shaikhs: The Shaikh, the ’Allaamah, Abu ’Abdullah Muhammad Ibrahim ibn Fadl al-Deen al-Jundalwi … [and] the Shaikh Abul-Barakaat Ahmad ibn Isma’il, [and] the Shaikh Muhammad Shareefullaah, [and] the Haafidh, the Muhaddith, ’Abdul-Wahhaab al-Barhimalwi, [and] His Eminence, the Shaikh, ’Abdul-’Aziz ibn ’Abdullah ibn Baaz, [and] the Shaikh, the ’Allaamah, ’Abdul-Muhsin ibn Hamad al-’Abbaad al-Badr, [and] the Shaikh, the ’Allaamah, the Imaam Muhammad al-Ameen ibn Muhammad al-Mukhtaar ash-Shanqiti, [and] the Shaikh ’Atiyyah ibn Muhammad Saalim, [and] the Shaikh, the ’Allaamah, ’the Muhaddith Hammaad al-Ansaari, [and] the Shaikh, the ’Allaamah, the Muhaddith Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani … Ehsan studied under him at the Islamic University of Madeenah, and Shaikh Ehsan used to love Shaikh al-Albaani and cherish him due to his excellence and because he was his teacher, and he had a debate with al-Albaani with manners and respect in some issues in which there was a difference of opinion and Shaikh al-Albaani used to praise Ehsan and his intelligence and al-Albaani said to ’Aabid, Shaikh Ehsan’s brother, ‘He was one of the intellectuals, and I will not forget the manners and politeness he afforded me …’ and he mentioned to him [i.e., to ’Aabid] that Ehsan travelled with him to London and he would massage Shaikh al-Albaani’s feet out of respect and esteem for him.”

The Muhaddith of Medinah, Al-’Abbaad, Asked About Ignorant People who Warn Against The Imaam, The Mujaddid, Al-Albaani

Questioner: What is your advice about people who slander Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, and warn against him? And what should our stance towards such an individual be?

Al-’Abbaad: That is the strangest thing, the fact that Shaikh al-Albaani is warned against, that a man who served the Sunnah is warned against, someone who spent his [entire] life examining and researching the hadiths of Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ, clarifying the authentic from what is not. What a person should do is supplicate for him, praise him, and benefit from his knowledge.

And the reality is that there are two people who someone working in the [field of] hadith cannot but refer back to, i.e., al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr and Shaikh al-Albaani. The benefit from al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr in those things connected to hadith is colossal, and the benefit from Shaikh al-Albaani in those things connected to hadith is colossal [too].

For this reason it means that the one who warns against Al-Albaani is warning against becoming acquainted with the truth and accessing the Sunnah, because what Al-Albaani did in connection to hadith was a preeminent service and complete diligence in [serving] the Sunnah, facilitating access to it and bringing it closer to comprehension for the students of knowledge.

So he is worthy of being complimented and supplicated for.

Al-Albaani Lined up to Pray but the Imaam said, “Get out! Get out! Get out of the Mosque!” So Al-Albaani said …

“My son, Shaikh Muhammad Zahraan ibn ’Abdullaah ’Aloosh told me that one of his friends, a youth, told him that Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani wanted to cause fitnah in the Al-Daqqaaq Jaami’ Mosque and that Shaikh ’Abdul-’Aziz al-Rifaa’i was able to stop him in his tracks, according to what this youth’s grandfather said. My son asked me about this incident, so I told him that:

‘I was there when it happened in 1956. We were in a lesson of our Shaikh and Muhaddith, al-Albaani, in Shaikh ’Abdur-Rahmaan al-Baani’s house [not al-Albaani, i.e., Shaikh Al-Albaani was giving a lecture in the house of another Shaikh called ’Abdur-Rahmaan al-Baani] in al-Midan. When he finished from his first dars, we left with the Shaikh to perform ’ishaa prayer in Jaami’ al-Daqqaaq, so the ’iqaamah for the prayer was given.

The Imaam was [a person called] Shaikh ’Abdul-’Aziz al-Rifaa’i, when he turned around to the worshippers to ask them to straighten their rows he caught a glimpse of our Shaikh al-Albaani standing in the first row to the right, about ten metres from him.

So Shaitaan overtook Shaikh al-Rifa’i and made him forget the remembrance of Allah, and he forgot the du’aa that was usually said before the prayer … and he shook as though the Devil had thrown a bucket of hot water on him, or like a thousand watt electrical current had struck him, so he started shouting angrily, ‘Get out! Get out! Get out!’ addressing these hard words at our Shaikh al-Albaani, expelling him from the mosque!

But our Shaikh replied to him with complete calm, saying, I am in the House of Allaah, the Most High—I’m not in your house, and when I enter your house, throw me out [then]!’

So Shaikh al-Rifa’i’s rage and anger increased even more, and he shouted out [quoting the hadith], ‘My ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire—’ and he pointed with his hand at al-Albaani!

Some of the worshippers tried to calm the Shaikh [i.e., the Imaam] and others said, ‘Yaa Jamaa’ah, pray now and delay your fighting for after the prayer!’ So the Imaam prayed and we prayed behind him and it was a prayer like that of the one who performed his prayer badly!

After he gave salaam, the Imaam immediately turned and began shouting and screaming again and saying things. So we calmly left the mosque and left Shaikh Rifa’i to quench his desire.

A number of young guys met us, or Shaikh Rifa’i sent them to us, who wanted to fight us. We were about twenty youth in number and had circled our Shaikh al-Albaani, but then some of the noble people from that area who had intellect got involved and prevented the youth from al-Rifa’i’s group with wisdom and calming words, and it was over.

So who created that fitnah and stoked the fire? It was Shaikh ’Abdul-’Aziz al-Rifaa’i, may Allaah forgive us and him.’”

The Imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah, Ibn Baaz, asked About Al-Albaani: He is not Infallible and Makes Mistakes Like all Other Scholars

Questioner: What is your Eminence’s opinion about relying on what al-Albaani has authenticated?

The Imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah, Ibn Baaz: Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, is from the elite, from the scholars well-known for their integrity, sound ’aqidah, and diligence in authenticating hadiths and clarifying their status. He is a chief support/pillar in this regard, but he is not infallible, he may fall into a mistake in declaring some hadiths authentic or weak, just like any other scholar, every scholar is like that, having some mistakes, from the earliest scholars to those who came later.

The student of knowledge must look at what he has authenticated, or declared hasan or weak, if he is from the people of knowledge, from the people of this field, someone who knows hadiths and can take a look at their paths of narration and their narrators, such that if he finds that what the Shaikh has said is correct, then alhamdulillaah, and if not then he relies on the proofs that are clear to him which the people of knowledge in this field have followed. Because the people of knowledge established principles to authenticate hadiths and declare them weak, as for [… unclear …] the people of knowledge, he [i.e., al-Albaani] is a chief support/pillar in authenticating and declaring hadiths to be weak, because he is from the people of knowledge, he is from those who are [experts] in this field, he has studied for a long time and many years, we ask Allaah to give us and him success and a good ending.

Questioner: Ameen, O Allaah, and may Allaah reward you with good.

See here for a collection of statements that scholars made about Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.

Ibn Baaz Interceding on Behalf of Al-Albaani, may Allaah have Mercy on them both

“Shaikh Ibn Baaz interceded for Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, to remain in Jordan when they wanted to exile him, whereby he wrote a letter to the King of Jordan which contained advice and a mention of the rank of Shaikh Al-Albaani, so the person in authority there agreed to let the Shaikh stay in Jordan.”

Shaikh Muqbil About al-Albaani, ‘Verily, I Am in Awe of Him.’

Host: Alhamdulillaahi-rabbil-’aalameen, wa sallallaahu ’alaa Muhammad wa ’alaa Aalihi wa sallam, as for what follows. These are questions from some of those who are our brothers for Allaah’s Sake, we present them to [him who] is our brother for Allaah’s Sake, Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi’i may Allaah protect him, we hope for answers to the questions from him with proofs from the Book and the Sunnah.

The questioner says that I have heard that your Eminence has studied some of the hadiths which our Shaikh, the virtuous one, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani made mistakes in, in [his books] As-Saheehah and Ad-Da’eefah, so what are they and could you explain the mistakes?

Muqbil: A good brother, may Allaah the Most High protect him, had requested a written answer and I did not have time to do that, a verbal answer was easier for me, so the hadiths which we hold that the Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him—and he is regarded as the Imaam of his time in the science of hadith—was lenient in … and in my books and writings I resolve [and go with] what I hold to be the truth and I do not expose myself to clash with the Shaikh, may Allaah the Most High protect him—for verily, I am in awe of him—and let the one who is present [and has heard me say that I am in awe of him] inform the one who is absent [from this gathering and did not hear me say what I just did.]

But some letters came to me, a letter from [someone who is] a brother for Allaah’s Sake from Taif, where he objected against the Shaikh regarding some hadiths, and he requested that I write an introduction so I did, and a letter from al-Ahsaa from someone who is a brother for Allaah’s Sake requesting that I take a look at it and write an introduction so I did, and a letter from Egypt was sent to me, I had a look at those hadiths and I advised the good brother who wanted to scrutinise the hadiths which he held that Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, had made a mistake in, so I advised him not to be concerned about that and that if he must do so then he should have a special notebook for this topic and every time he [happens to] came across a hadith he records it therein, as for him intentionally researching [these mistakes] then it will take him his whole lifetime—because Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, is regarded as the most knowledgeable of his time in the science of hadith and he has exhausted more than fifty years of his life [in this field], so someone who is studying the hadiths he made mistakes in will have to exhaust a similar amount of time to that, or less or more.

And Shaikh Ismaa’eel al-Ansaari, may Allaah the Most High protect him, has some observations as regards the discussion concerning the forbiddance of gold for women, circular gold, and I hold that the truth [in this issue] is with Shaikh Ismaa’eel al-Ansaari, may Allaah the Most High protect him. As for knowledge of hadith—no-one can compare to Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani [in it]—nevertheless it has reached me that the Shaikh himself has taken up this issue and has written a book in which he has collected the hadiths which he had authenticated but which he then later discovered were weak or weak hadiths which he later discovered were authentic, some of my brothers for Allaah’s Sake told me about that, and I don’t know whether this book is ready for publishing, and the Muslims are in dire need of it …

… and when the Shaikh passes away, may Allaah the Most High protect him and I ask Allaah the Most Great to bless his life, you will see more criticisms, but [now] the people stand in awe of the Shaikh, and what did he do with Abu Ghuddah? And what did he do with al-Kataani? And what did he do with the Minister of Religious Endowments in Abu Dhabi who objected to him? What is correct is that he dissected him [with his answers] until the Minister of Religious Endowments [must’ve] wished he was dead if he had any life in his heart and [wished] that he had not objected to Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him.

Shaikh Muqbil About The Most Knowledgeable Person in Hadith in This Time and Libraries that Do not Have His Books

The Imaam of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “… and likewise hadith, the most knowledgeable person found in this time [concerning hadith] is the Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, indeed we advise all students of knowledge to get hold of his books and to benefit from them—any library that does not have the books of Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani is inadequate. So may Allaah reward him well on behalf of Islaam and the Muslims.”

Ijaabatus-Saa‘il ’alaa Ahammil-Masaa‘il, p. 559.

Shaikh Muqbil About Al-Albaani, “He had no Peer in This Era.”

The Imaam of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, said about Al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on them both, “He has no peer in this era. And it should be known that Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, has knowledge/learning [from what he has had access to] which no one else does, and reference works became available to him which no-one else had. Many a reference is not available to us, so we have to quote it from the books of Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, referencing it back to him. So may Allaah reward him well on behalf of [what he has done for] Islaam.”

The Shaikh of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, on Al-Albaani’s Nine Volume Work, ‘Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel’

Questioner: What is the scholarly, fiqh benefit of [Shaikh al-Albaani’s nine volume work called] Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel?

Shaikh Muqbil: Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel is a book of fiqh and a book of jarh and ta’deel and a book of authenticating [hadiths] and declaring them to be weak, so it is regarded as one of the most precious of Shaikh al-Albaani’s books, may Allaah the Most High protect him, and the collection of paths of narration which the Shaikh brings is something which it might not be possible for someone who lives in this time to do, so it is from the most precious—and I don’t [just] say from the most precious of Shaikh al-Albaani’s books—but rather that it is one of the most precious of all books. And how numerous are the authors in this time who benefit from the books of the Shaikh, may Allaah the Most High protect him. [Shaikh Muqbil answered this question while Shaikh al-Albaani was alive, may Allaah have mercy on them both]

Al-Albaani’s Humility

He said, “And if you see that I have strayed or made a mistake you must advise me …”

Shaikh ’Abdul-Muhsin al-’Abbaad’s Obituary of Al-Albaani

Shaikh ’Abdul-Muhsin al-’Abbaad said, “All praise is due to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds, and may He praise and send peace upon His Slave and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad and upon his Family and all of his Companions.

As for what follows:

We remember the statement of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم in the hadith whose authenticity is agreed upon, reported from ’Abdullah ibn ’Amr ibn al-’Aas, may Allaah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Verily, Allaah does not take away knowledge by snatching it, snatching it from men’s hearts, but He takes away knowledge through the death of the scholars.” This noble hadith shows the importance of knowledge and the greatness of the rank of the scholars, and that losing them and their going away [through death] is nothing but a taking away of knowledge, and that Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not take it away from the hearts of men whereby a person has it and then becomes someone who does not, but He takes it away through the death of the scholars, and he has said, عليه الصلاة والسلام, “And indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets. And verily the Prophets do not leave behind a dinar or a dirham for inheritance–but rather they leave behind knowledge. So whoever takes hold of it, has acquired a copious share.”

This is the rank of the scholars, and this is the status of the scholars who the Chosen Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم described as being inheritors of the Prophets.

And how excellent an inheritance it is–beneficial knowledge: legislated knowledge taken from the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the Sunnah of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, because this is true knowledge, that of the Book and the Sunnah.

And as is known and mentioned in the statements of some of the people of knowledge: the passing of the scholars is an occasion of a gap in the Religion and a loss for the Muslims when those scholars who are referred to, who are benefitted from, who direct and give insight and enlighten them, leave, indeed that is a huge loss for the people.

And from that which has taken place in the last few days is the passing of the formidable scholar, the illustrious Hadith authority, the ’Allaamah, the Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him and forgive him.

He was, truly, a magnificent scholar and well-known Hadith authority, who made enormous efforts in serving the Sunnah and in protecting the Hadith of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and clarifying the sources of those hadiths and the books that mentioned them, and clarifying their grading in terms of authenticity and weakness.

From those books [which Shaikh al-Albaani gave tremendous attention to] is the very book that we study [i.e., which Shaikh ’Abbaad teaches in the Prophet’s Mosque], Sunan Abu Dawud, for he expended great effort on it and others, devoting his attention to mentioning what he declared to be authentic and weak. So his efforts are enormous, and his service to the Sunnah distinguished and the student of knowledge cannot do without referring back to his books and his works, for verily there is abundant good in them, and profuse knowledge.

The passing of a scholar like this is in reality a loss and calamity upon the Muslims, and we ask Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, to whom belongs what He took and what He gave to replace [the loss] with good for the Muslims, and to grant them success to attain that in which lies their well-being and happiness, and that He aids the students of knowledge to give due attention to attain, seek, and become acquainted with it, indeed, He, the One free of all defects and the Most High, is Munificent, Generous.

And as is known, his books are great and renowned, and the majority of libraries will not be devoid of them or some of them, for they are in the tens, some large, others small and some medium in size.

In short, the passing of such a scholar, may Allaah have mercy on him, is a great loss for the Muslims, so we ask Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, to replace [it] with good for them, and that He aids the students of knowledge to acquire beneficial knowledge and action upon that knowledge, indeed, He, the One free of all defects and the Most High, is Munificent, Generous.

And even though he, may Allaah have mercy on him, had some opinions which we regard as being mistakes, they are however obscure in the sea, or seas, of that which he was correct in and [are overwhelmed] by the good and benefit he brought about for the Muslims in serving the Sunnah of al-Mustafaa, صلوات الله وسلامه وبركاته عليه.  We regard those issues that emanated from him to be  mistakes in which he strove to come to a legislated ruling [mujtahid] and [thus] he will be rewarded for his ijtihaad, but let that not make a person belittle or make slight of his vast knowledge, of his copious knowledge, of his tremendous service, of his massive benefit–for he, in truth, is from the unique scholars of this time and from those who have made strenuous efforts in the service of the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.

In the first half of this year, 1420 AH [1999 CE], the Muslims lost a great scholar, a Rabbaani scholar, we regard him as such based upon what is apparent to us and we entrust the reality of his situation and ending to Allaah, and that [scholar] was his excellency, the Shaikh, the ’Allaamah ’Abdul-’Aziz ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, and in the second quarter of the same year this great scholar, the famous muhaddith, the Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani passed away, may Allaah the Mighty and Majestic, have mercy on him. And in between [the time of] both of their deaths, the Shaikh ’Atiyyah Muhammad Saalim, may Allaah have mercy on him, who used to teach in the Prophet’s Mosque, passed away. So we have lost these three scholars and we ask Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, to forgive all of them, to overlook their sins and to raise their ranks.

Indeed these two scholars, in our opinion, are from the major, expert, investigative scholars who had a superior concern and resolute determination [in serving the Sunnah] and abundant good came about at their hands, huge benefit came to Islaam and the Muslims because of them–so may Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, reward them with the best reward, forgive them, overlook their sins, and seal all of our deaths with a blissful ending, indeed He, the One free of all defects and the Most High, is Munificent, Generous.”

The Incident That Directed Al-Albaani Towards the Science of Hadith

“Imaam al-Albaani grew up in Damascus, Syria.  In his youth the state the Ummah had reached alarmed and greatly disturbed him: [its] ignorance, myths/superstitions, blind following, innovations, misguidance, in fact polytheism and idol worship, and he used to renounce it. A Shaikh heard him forbidding some wrong and so said to him, ‘Haven’t you heard the hadith of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, “Leave the people in their heedlessness?”

Al-Albaani, still a youth, replied, “Who reported this hadith? And what is its grading?” The Shaikh was taken aback by this youth and was unable, naturally, to answer him.

So al-Albani went and started to delve deeply into books, checking, researching, scrutinising until Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, guided him to the hadith with its complete wording, “Leave the people to their heedlessness, they are granted provision [by Allaah] one from another,” [see here for other wordings of this hadith without the word ‘heedlessness,’ to get a clearer context of the meaning] and so he checked it and expounded upon the condition of its narrators and made known its grading.

So Shaikh al-Albaani told me one time that this was the beginning of his work in this noble [field of] knowledge.”

Al-Albaani and Fame

Shaikh Abu Islaam Saalih Taa Haa said, “A man one day invited the Shaikh to visit him in his house and announced the visit on some media outlets and so a large number of people gathered to see the Shaikh and listen to him.  When the Shaikh came to know of that he refused to go to the invite. I later asked him about his reason for not going, and he said, ‘Showing off destroys a person.’

Al-Aqeedah Awwalan Law Kanu Ya’lamun, pp. 14-15.

‘This is a Gift Which No-one Except al-Albaani will Give to You.’

Shaikh Abu Islaam Saalih Taa Haa said, “He used to teach us humbleness, and an example of his humility and fine behaviour towards me is that many times he would visit us after Fajr prayer and would bring a modest gift with him, may Allaah have mercy on him, and sometimes say, jokingly, ‘This is a gift which no-one except al-Albaani will give to you,’ due to [both] the modest nature of the gift and his [own] modesty.”

Al-Aqeedah Awwalan Law Kanu Ya’lamun, p. 22.

Al-Albaani and Turning up on Time

Shaikh Abu Islaam Saalih Taa Haa said, “Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, used to teach us to be precise for appointments. An example of that is when I would invite him to visit me or if I accompanied him to an invite, he, may Allaah have mercy on him, would not turn up late or early for the set engagement.

Once I invited him over at 1 pm and he arrived in his car before that by a quarter of an hour, and remained seated in it and did not get out until the time was due … I was not aware of the Shaikh’s presence, it was the people who accompanied him who told me about that [later]. When I asked the Shaikh about that, he said, ‘Because before the [set] time you’re busy preparing for the guest’s arrival at [that] specified time … if we were to come in before it, we’d divert you from your preparation for your guests.’

So may Allaah have mercy on our Shaikh, how precise his understanding was! And how keen he was to act upon the Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.

And when he, may Allaah have mercy on him, was invited to a place he would not take anyone with him unless the host had permitted him to. One time I invited him saying, ‘Our Shaikh! I invite you to lunch with me tomorrow,’ and by that I meant him and his wife, Umm al-Fadl. The next day he came alone so I said to him, ‘Where is Umm al-Fadl?’ So he replied, ‘You didn’t mention to me that I should bring Umm al-Fadl with me. And we stick to being precise in what is said.’”

Al-Aqeedah Awwalan Law Kanu Ya’lamun, pp. 17-18.

Al-Albaani’s Goal in Life

The Imaam said, “And in reality, my entire goal in this life–after carrying out the obligatory duties and rights that Allaah has made incumbent upon me–is but to acquaint the Muslims with the accurate biography [seerah] of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم from every aspect as far as I am able, by teaching [them], lecturing and writing, and to urge them to take him as the definitive example for themselves, as Allaah the Most High has asked them to, as occurs in His Saying:

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allaah an excellent example for anyone whose hope is in Allaah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allaah much.” [Al-Ahzaab 33:21]

And in that lies their happiness in this world and the Hereafter.”

A Lovely Letter From Ibn Baaz to Al-Albaani

In the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

From Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullaah ibn Baaz to the honourable, revered brother, the eminent Shaikh, Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah grant him success.

Salaamun alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu.

As for what follows:

Your amicable letter reached me through Shaikh Muhammad ibn Naasir al-Aboodi, may Allaah bestow His Guidance upon you and it pleased me greatly due to its informing me of your good health and the fact that you are continuing to write and teach and call to Allaah, all praise is due to Allaah for that, and I ask Him, the Most High, to give you even more success and that He grants you continued vigour to do everything that benefits the Muslims, indeed He is Most Gracious, Most Generous.

Just as I was also pleased at your completion of the summarisation of the Saheeh of Imaam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaaj and your resolve to summarise the Saheeh of Imaam al-Bukhaari whilst paying attention to the [core] meanings and without their being any detriment to it, I ask Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, to give you the good that you hope for, and that He helps you in everything in which there is good for the Muslims and in which lies their deliverance in this world and the next.

There is no doubt that the people of knowledge are in need of a summary of the Saheeh of Imaam al-Bukhaari whilst paying attention to [preserving] the [core] meanings, but that requires a huge effort and a long time, so if that [task] does not disrupt you from doing what is more important like directing [the people], teaching, da’wah and writing against innovations and superstitions/myths, and making authentic hadiths clear from the weak–then there is no harm in that.

In any case, my advice to your eminence is to fear Allaah in all matters and to seek His Guidance [istikhaarah], subhaanah, concerning this lofty project and to seek the counsel of those whose knowledge and advice you trust, and then if you are pleased with that then seek Allaah’s Aid and act–and [we] ask Allaah to grant you what is correct, and [to grant you] support and facilitation, and that He makes us and you and all of our brothers callers to guidance, helpers of the truth, indeed He is All-Hearing, the One who is Near, and we will spare no effort, inshaa Allaah, in seeking the help of some of those who love good to undertake the printing of your summary of Saheeh Muslim, and I will inform you of what comes of that, inshaa Allaah.

As for volumes nine, ten and eleven of Fathul-Baari, then we have taken them from Shaikh Muhammad Abdul-Muhsin al-Kutbi, and they will reach you, inshaa Allaah, via some of the students.

And the one who loves you [i.e., Shaikh Ibn Baaz is referring to himself as someone who loves Shaikh al-Albaani] is ready to provide every necessity and [fulfil every] need that he is able to, may Allaah make me and you from those who love each other for His Sake until the time we meet Him, subhaanah, and I hope that my greeting of salaam be conveyed to [my] sons [i.e., the youth] , and the notable Shaikhs and brothers especially Shaikh Zuhair, just as all the sons, Shaikhs and brothers amongst us are fine and in good health.

Was-salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu.

PS. We have made a copy of Kitaabus-Sunnah of Ibn Abi Aasim with costs covered by the esteemed sir, Hasan ash-Sharbatli, and we indicated to him that a [fair] amount be printed, and he agreed to that.

We attained a manuscript of the aforementioned book and Shaikh Hammaad al-Ansaari, the one whom all love, informed me that it is written in a good [clear] script, so we borrowed it from its owner, and saw fit that two copies be sent to your eminence to correct, check and annotate after you tell us how much [monetary] compensation you deem to be appropriate for this project so that we can inform ash-Sharbatli about that and get his approval.

We have handed over the two books to Shaikh Ameen Lutfi to pass on to your eminence, and we are waiting for a speedy response from you concerning this issue.

Shaikh Zuhair mentioned to me that he has decided to print the aforementioned book and so I would hope that contact be made with him and that he be informed, so that I can [then] be notified of both of your opinions regarding that, for I fear that he may have a specific opinion concerning the topic since he has resolved to print the book.

And I ask Allaah to grant everyone the success to do what pleases Him.

Wa sallallaahu alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad wa Aalihi wa Sahbihi wa sallam.

Correspondence Between the Two Imaams, Al-Albaani and Ibn Baaz | A Letter Concerning the Printing of Fathul-Baari

In the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

From Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, to His Eminence, Shaikh Abdul-Aziz ibn Baaz

Wa alaikum as-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu.

So I praise Allaah, besides whom none has the right to be worshipped, [mentioning this praise] to you and I ask Him to continue to give us and you His Blessings, both hidden and apparent.

As for what follows:

I received your [most] gracious letter dated 20th Shawwaal 1378ah [29/4/1959ce] some time ago and through it came to understand your resolve to print a new edition of Fathul-Baari. I thank you for the good opinion you have of your brother in that you nominated me to carry out the checking of the copy being prepared for publishing, and to compare it to other printed copies and manuscripts.

But I feel you should excuse me from that [duty] and charge it to someone else, for no other reason than the fact that I think it is more appropriate if I were to [instead] spend the time that that crucial work would demand by doing what is in dire need of my specialty [like] aiding the Sunnah by distinguishing between its authentic and weak hadiths and deriving rulings and understanding them.

For this reason I propose you look at the following suggestions:

That you ask someone to send the final draft [[fascicle] to me] after it has been corrected and prepared for print so that I can take a quick look at it, perchance I may come across some mistakes and thus correct them, and so that I can make notes in some places which it appears to me are in need of being annotated, something which can be limited according to the following:

1) Pointing out an authentic hadith which the author declared to be weak, or which he kept silent about.

2) [Likewise] pointing out a weak hadith which the author declared to be strong, or which he kept silent about.

3) Declaring the truth which is in accordance with the Book and the Sunnah about those issues which the commentator mentioned in detail but concerning which he did not then go on to choose a particular statement as being the one closest to the truth.

4) Clarifying some areas that need elucidation, especially those that are connected to the Salafi creed and doing that not by way of examination and scrutiny, for that would require free time and a huge effort, but rather according to what is easy for me to do.

In short, I hold that publishing the explanation with these verifications is more beneficial for the people, especially when it has reached me from a reliable source that one of the Moroccan hadith scholars from the Sufis has also made preparations to print this book. And there is no doubt that he will annotate it with comments which will direct the readers to his misguidance and innovations, from which is his taking the hadith, ‘O Allaah, bless us in our Shaam …’ They said, ‘And our Najd, O Messenger of Allaah,’ He replied, ‘Earthquakes and trials/tribulations are there …’ the hadith, which he uses against our monotheistic brothers from Najd and he calls them, rather he labels them [derogatively] as, ‘Qarniyyin.

And this hadith is in Bukhaari as you know, do you not see the need to comment on it and others like it whose reality the innovators turn away from, and which they exploit to refute the monotheists, and which they use as a support in causing the misguided Muslims to fall into polytheism [shirk]?

Thereafter, I will seize this opportunity to present some suggestions to you which are connected to the printing of the book so that it can be published in an elegant and pleasing fashion:

1) Mentioning the chapter in the middle of the line.

2) Numbering the chapters and sections in an ordinal fashion to narrow down the number of sections in each chapter, for that helps in benefitting from the index of Bukhaari as is done in the book Miftaah Kunooz as-Sunnah.

3) Numbering each hadith sequentially to the end of the book, and with that, the number of hadith of Bukhaari will become clear, placing the numbering at the start of the line.

4) Writing the title of the chapter in the middle of the exegesis.

5) Mentioning the chapter in a header on each page.

6) Clarifying the confusing parts of the explanation through the use of diacritical marks.

7) Publishing each volume in a number of [smaller] volumes as they finally did with Lisaanul-Arab and Tabaqaatul-Kubraa, making it easier for those who want to buy it to do so [i.e., instead of having to buy the whole collection in one go].

8) Covering each volume with an engraved, colour binding in the manner done with Lisaan and Tabaqaat.

This is what I saw fit to mention as suggestions.

And I ask Allaah, the Most High, to grant you the success to print the book in the most correct and perfect manner, and your reward is upon Allaah, the Blessed and Most High.

Was-Salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu and [may this greeting also go] to all of the Shaikhs, teachers and brothers with you.

Your brother,

Ibn Baaz: ‘We spent our time with the speech of the scholars of fiqh, and al-Albaani spent his time with the hadiths of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم’

Shaikh Mashoor Hasan, may Allaah protect him, said, “A student of the Shaikh, the Allaamah, the Faqih of his time, Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, visited me, being very enthusiastic about meeting our Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.  When I asked him why he was so eager, he said, ‘I heard my Shaikh, Shaikh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy on him, saying:

‘We spent our time with the speech of the scholars of fiqh [the fuqahaa], and al-Albaani spent his time with the hadiths of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.’’”

Al-Albaani on His Balcony and The Fig Tree

“There used to be a fig tree in his house in Amman [Jordan], from which he would take figs while seated on his balcony.  He would do so by using a long stick that he had devised where he had split and overlapped it so that he controlled how long or short he wanted it.  At its end he placed a sharp, pointed cup, so that when he touched them with the tip of the stick, the figs would fall into the cup.”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Duroos, wa Mawaaqif, wa Ibar, of Abdul-Aziz ibn Muhammad Abdullaah as-Sadhaan, p. 111.

Al-Albaani and His Bicycle: The Turbaned Shaikh was the Talk of the Town But He Didn’t Care

He said, “I bought a bicycle to ride and it was the first time the Damascenes saw such a spectacle: a turbaned Shaikh riding a bicycle!

They were astonished at such a sight.

There used to be a magazine called Al-Mudhik al-Mubki1 which a Christian man would publish, he mentioned this incident among the witty jokes [therein, but] I wouldn’t care about these petty issues—all that concerned me was time.”

1 A comedic magazine published in Damascus by a journalist called Habeeb Kahaalah.  In each edition he would print a picture which would be the talk of the town for the whole week.
